Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born in Barranquilla, Colombia on February 2, 1977 as Shakira. 'Shakira' is an Arabic name means 'grateful'. She is a Colombian singer, songwriter, dancer and model. She is the daughter of Nidia Ripoll and William Mebarak Chadid and is the only child of her parents. A logn time ago her paternal grandparents emigrated from Lebanon to New York City and there her father was born. As her mother side she belongs to Spanish and Italian ancestry. She attended Catholic schools and was raised as Roman Catholic. She has eight older half-siblings from her father's previous marriage. Shakira spent maximum time of her youth in Barranquilla. When Shakira was only four years old, wrote her first poem 'La Rosa De Cristal' means 'The Crystal Rose'. She always had been watching her father wrote stories on a typewriter and she demanded the new one as a Christmas gift. When she was seven, finally got a typewriter and she continued writing poetries. Her poems were eventually converted into songs. Shakira wrote her first song, titled 'Tus gafas oscuras' means 'Your dark glasses' when she was eight years old.
Shakira at her four, first heard the doumbek, a traditional drum used in Arabic music which typically accompanied belly dancing in a local Middle Eastern restaurant. She started practiceing on a table at home because she wanted to be a performer. She sang at her Catholic school for schoolmates and teachers but was rejected in second grade due to her strong vibrato for the school choir. Once her school music teacher told her that she sounded 'like a goat'. At the school she had been called 'the belly dancer girl'.
Shakira was being invited to various events in Barranquilla till her 13 and achieved a lot of identification as a singer in that region. During this time she met local theater producer Monica Ariza, who was impressed with her and started helping her career. Ariza convinced Sony Colombia executive Ciro Vargas in a flight from Barranquilla to Bogota, for an audition of Shakira. Vargas gave the cassette of Shakira's song to the artist director of Sony and ovisly was rejected. Later Vargas set up an audition in Bogota and invited Sony Colombia executives to join at the audition and here Shakira's performance of three songs surprised and impressed them enough and she was signed to record three albums.
